⚠️ Design suggestions for forum conversation view how to be AROUND the normal forum "classic" view as it was NOT the other way around like is being done and if that can't be done DON'T even try
| (Ive edited this a few times but i left most of my original phrasing in here just changed things enough to avoid confusion after the reversion of some things) No one that has any common sense or not a sadist would ever try to change a forum into another kind of social media format or cripple it's functionality by destroying what has been established for decades now all for a fleeting fad that no one asked for. That would be user hostile to point of an act of war against existing users by ripping out our sensory organs of quotes and proper formatting of the forum that make a forum a forum. People joined the forum because it's a forum not some other format and will leave to other sites if it's changed. It now (when I had written this originally during the removal of quote button and replacing it with a reply function) looks like Facebook comments as it currently stands on classic view and thats NOT a good thing, that is a very bad thing. Likewise conversation view is all wrong in design this way in so many ways there is so many things that can go wrong with how it's formatted and coded currently. You can reply to the wrong users from classic view where it appears to someone else on conversation view which would easily happen by accident by people not understanding the very unforum like interface trying to find a place to reply. You also can mention users that will not even get the reply below their posts in conversation view defeating the purpose and so on. A user can easily accidentally double or tripple or quadrouple post due to two formats existing in direct conflict with eachother. You can reply to a user in a way you can make it not clear from classic view you even replied to them at all. I tried to figure out a possible solution but there is none that isnt damaging in one way or another. At best I could come up with is like this -user on a proper "classic" view makes post quoting two+ users (below is a quick mockup with what im able to work with here to help visualize what im saying. I double quoted to avoid pinging any potential users here by accident so just ignore "expand quote" button that's not part of design im saying) classicuser said: Words1 Words2 -each user quoted sees from conversation view sees a message reply containing only the part of the message directed at them each in their own seporate space with the quote bbcode filtered out from view. user1 said: words words words ____________________________________________ user2 said: words words words -user on conversation view replies to user user1 said: words words words -user replied to sees from classic view their post having been quoted by user that replied to them conversationuser said: words1 -classic view there should just be quote which will post at the box at bottom of page (or top in some cases i guess? While conversation view should just have "reply" posting below the post replied to. Doing this would prevent having to change the appearance and behavior of the classic view and avoid unwanted behaviour on conversation view. -user on conversation view makes separate replies to two users in short period of time -the two posts appear as double post on classic view -to prevent this double and tripple posts made within a certain time frame get automatically merged in classic view while remaining separate on conversation view -user on classic view makes two posts to two users that are not a double post on classic view -is in same conversation chain on conversation view and appears as double post from there -to prevent double/trip/quad posts in conversation view the posts are merged from this view while remaining individual posts on classic view -user mentions from classic view should be just be treated like a reply to the main thread not a reply to a user in this format because the way people use user mention it would not allow for splitting posts up as easily as quotes. I know user mentions is useful and I would miss it if it were gone but I think it's no where near as bad to remove compared to quotes since many forums dont have user mentions and it was only added a few years ago to MAL which to me isnt long so i can get used to that function being gone again like it used to be but that's just me. Meanwhile every forum uses a quote function, without quotes its no longer a forum format at all so that should never be removed. -IF not removing user mentions or ignoring the user mentions then things get complicated to make it work with conversation view converted to replies and you would have to find a way to distinguish between someone listing users like @user1 @user2 @user3 Words words words words words And @user1 @user2 @user3 Words words words words VS @user1 Words1 @user2 Words2 @user3 Words3 VS a mix @user1 Words1 @user2 @user3 Words2 @user4 Words3 -have first type when on conversation view place the same reply under each of those users posts as a sort of shortcut or something so it doesnt have to be duplicated in some other way. -second type on conversation view end the reply as soon as a new user mention is posted in there -essentially you have to detect if there is or is not text between these posts -type three then that really pushes the limits doing a combination of both functions I question that's even possible at all as if the quote splitting wasnt hard enough but then having to also pair this functionality with the actions used for quoting. That all complicates it too much i would think. Just quotes seems at least somewhat plausible maybe, but i dont know without knowing the inner workings of the site. A few double posts isnt too big a deal since only on occasion will it be too confusing so long as the strategy i describe is what is used as it will help preserve a logical conversation flow, so that isn't main priority, what is priority definitely should be the maintaining of ability to quote users and keep the BBcode accesable as it always has been and watch out for seriously inconveniencing bugs (such as how notifications now arent switching to have been read upon being read), and NOT be done what was done making it all replies. What I described may be possible in theory without causing problems like the current disaster is but I imagine it would be far too difficult to implement when the devs I question their skill level on what they can be capable of. It's pretty much seems impossible to maintain two separate style sites on a single site. Just back out of this plan while you still can if you can't acomplish a harmonious environment for user interface not like what was done where quoting people and the bbcode of other users posts was taking away and you only could reply to individual users. if you want a different format that bad and cant get it to work without damaging what has been long established just make a separate sister site for it NOT ruining this one. Please consider how users are effected by each change to the site before doing anything and try to get their opinions with random selected user surveys and public polls for all to get an idea of how they think and act better. EDIT: Oh thank you they reverted it where quote is back but only temporarily since sounds like it's still trying to move forward. I will keep this here because this suggestion still is valid considering they are still attempting to implement this and I think my strategy is the only approach that has a chance of working at all if it's possible to pull off where a post can be treated as both a single post and multiple posts (depending on number of people quoted in the post) simultaneously hopefully without causing problems for anyone. Seems according to Kineta currently replies on conversation view will appear as user mentions on classic view. I feel it would be much more cross site functional for it to be quotes so people on classic view can actually follow the conversation properly. User mentions arent always clear which post is being referred to when a user has posted more than once in a thread. This also would add consistency where conversion works both directions more smoothly instead of trying to solve the same problem two different ways depending on direction the conversion goes. Also the advantage of quote base is old forum posts could also in theory at least possibly be converted. I dont know how that could be done though maybe having some secondary code follow whatever IDs a post to help split it up in conversation view while keeping it whole in classic? Additionally this should have been a feature long ago but YouTube embeds really dont need to be included in quotes they could just be reverted to plain youtube links once quoted. This also would help smooth over appearances and user friendliness since no one needs the same youtube embed to be loaded on a page every single place it is quoted that just uses up user RAM and slows the site likely. But maybe i need a separate suggestion thread for that kind of change? @Kineta Hopefully I made this clear and that it can actually be useful. Took a few hours from all the editing to make up some guide. EDIT2: There is basically two strategies to accomplish the splitting of classic posts into multiple posts in conversation view. One method is actually making each post have essentially child posts that make it. Like lets say the post ID is 123 and lets say there is two people quoted on conversation view it would split into 123/A and 123/B with the second set considered a separate identifier to avoid post ID conflicts even if the post gets edited each new edit would just get another second ID added on regardless of positioning order only based on posted order. Im not sure that would work for post merging though it may not. Another strategy likely easier to accomplish and better backward compatible with old posts is simply calling on the same classic view post in every conversation view reply to the users quoted but just hide the part of the message not directed at that particular user (along with hiding the quotes of course) in each space it appears in so the posts wont even need additional ID codes added to it at least in theory anyway. EDIT3: here we go again they took quote button away again. To reiterate one way to get this to work you need to display different elements depending on what mode is being used. In conversation view there can be text boxes that appear below posts when a button is clicked but that shouldnt happen when you are on classic view when quoting a user or several users which is common sense. Basically quote should be the reply function but it just displays differently on the different modes when posted. On classic view mode it just looks like it always has when the site worked, on conversation view mode it just hides the quote pyramid and either splits the post up or simply hides the part of the post not directed at a that specific user when in conversation view and loads the same content into the other posts hiding their own parts that need hidden. There is so many different approaches that dont involve making classic view a farce that shits on the community and if it can not be done without messing up classic view making it look like absolute trash and loses proper functionality, which will greatly decline your user activity and in return ad revenue and paid supporters, then just dont do it at all or face the financial consequences. |

| Very good post, @traed . I like your suggestions. They offer few ways of how to implement the change without getting rid of old functionalities to whom a lot of users (me included) are used to. I'd prefer to not have any changes at all, even if the reply views were optional, but hey - if a compromise of some sort is possible, then it's worth of trying it out. I tried user mentioning Kineta in the beta forum conversation view thread directing her to this thread and also mentioned her here and not sure if she is seeing these. She doesnt know any programming but she has access to contacting developers. Wouldnt help trying to reach Xinil, he hasnt logged in nearly half a year at this point. |

| Seems the devs wound up implimenting an idea I spitballed in the conversation view beta thread about a floating forum reply box so maybe someone on staff is reading some posts around here hopefully. Im not sure if that was a good solution i came up with, I think what I detailed in this thread covers more essential aspects of smooth operation while the floating box just helps multi quote replying in classic forum mode so far for me (aside from it's bugs like quotes sometimes jumping the wrong box) but who knows, maybe I did have the right idea originally, I cant tell without me having access to conversation view. |
