Why do people say he isn't a journalist just because he writes a column/opinion pieces and not "news"?
Being a column writer IS being a journalist...

I mean he is a journalist but opinion pieces are considered one of the lowest forms of journalism by the public and by journos.
Owen's a fantastic author, the establishment and how they get away with it is a great book. Chavs is amazing.
I don't think he's a great journalist, he cherry picks data that back up his existing bias to come up with his own conclusions. As do all opinion writers. Cherry picking data that confirms our existing beliefs is an existential crisis in society as every individual with a socal media account does it now.
That said he is one of the better opinion writers in the UK.
As a New Zealander with a political science and journalism degree, Im often astonished by his lack of understanding of basic parliamentary processes (him having to be told about third readings was mind blowing ) his lack of understanding of proportional representation (and his weird hatred of it when the left would almost always win elections in the UK if it had mmp) his obsession with replaying the 2017 UK election over and over and over again and as someone whose worked on two successful NZ labour party campaigns his regular hit pieces are utterly counterproductive and sometimes come off as a quite wealthy person having childish tantrums that his fave is't leading the party so he wants to burn it all to the ground.
Despite all that really really really like him though. He's got a great knowledge of the industrial revolution and historical labour movement and really speaks up for the unions and working class and minorities and gets brutally attacked for it.
All in all. He is a pretty average journalist. A fantastic author and an amazing activist.
